They encode the Bankleitzahl (BLZ, 8-digit bank routing code) and the Kontonummer (10-digit account number). BankValidor verifies the structure, computes the ISO 7064 MOD-97 checksum, and identifies the bank from the Bundesbank registry.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a German IBAN?
A German IBAN (Internationale Bankkontonummer) is a 22-character standardised bank identifier used for SEPA payments across Europe. It encodes the country code (DE), two check digits, the 8-digit Bankleitzahl (BLZ, the German routing code), and a 10-digit account number (Kontonummer).
What is a BLZ (Bankleitzahl)?
The Bankleitzahl (BLZ) is Germany's traditional 8-digit bank routing code, used domestically before IBAN adoption. It identifies the bank and region. You can find it in your German IBAN at positions 5-12. Deutsche Bank's BLZ is 37040044; Commerzbank Frankfurt is 20040000.
Is my German IBAN safe to share?
Your IBAN is designed to be shared — it is required for any SEPA transfer. However, only share it with trusted parties, as it can be used to initiate direct debits (SEPA Lastschrift). You can revoke unauthorized mandates through your bank. Never share your PIN or TAN codes.
How do I convert my old German bank account to IBAN?
German IBANs were mandatory since February 2014 for domestic SEPA transfers. Your IBAN is typically shown in your online banking or on your bank statements. If you only have a BLZ and Kontonummer, your bank can provide your IBAN, or use an online BLZ-to-IBAN converter (note: BankValidor validates but does not convert).
